The squadron has from the formation of the Riryal Flying Corps, been the basic unit of the Royal Air Force. When Commonwealth countries formed their own national air arms, the Royal Air Force command structure was also used. This permitted, during the Second World War, the establishment of multy-national forces throughout the world, into which were fed Alled squadrons as they were formed. Seldom, if ever in modern times has there been such a mixture of nationalitics in one military organisation.
