At the close of the 19th and the early years of the 20th centuries, military art depicting the last of the colorful uniforms, heroic cavalry charges, as well as a myriad of scenes of the soldiers life, were extremely popular. The reasons for this popularity were as different as the countries from which it sprang. France, smarting from the crushing defeats of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 which led to the loss of Alsace-Lorraine, needed to rekindle a feeling of national pride and a positive altitude about things military. One of the first French military artists to gain attention and recognition in the genre was Ernest Meissonier (1813-1891). Meissonier was sketching in the Held during the Austria vs. France and Piedmont Campaign in Italy 1859. and in 1870 he was requested by Napoleon III to paint the Franco-Prussian War. He was made a staff colonel in the Garde Nationale. but became so discouraged by France's continuing defeats, that he began to paint the victories of Napoleon I. for which he later became more famous.
