Indonesian, also known as Bahasa Indonesia, is the official language of Indonesia.

Indonesia is a form of Malay, an Austronesian (or Malayo-Polynesian) language, which had been used as a lingua franca in the Indonesian archipelago for centuries.

Standard Indonesian pronunciation, which is taught in this course, is based on the language of Jakarta.
Indonesian is spoken by nearly 35 million people as a first language and by 150 million people as a second language. It is also spoken in Thailand, East Timor, Sri Lanka, Africa, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Netherlands, and the US.

Besides Indonesian, there are over 300 local languages spoken in Indonesia, however,Indonesian is the primary language in education, government, business and communication.

Written Indonesian uses the Latin alphabet (like English), there are 26 letters.

Essential grammar and vocabulary – greetings, numbers, ordering food and drink, dealing with currency, scheduling a meal or meeting, giving and asking for directions, going shopping, visiting friends, making plans for the evening, taking trips, organizing transportation and talking about family. Speak comfortably about the past and make plans for the future!
Learn to understand much of what you hear, and speak with near-native pronunciation.

No mindless repetition! Converse with native speakers in natural (and useful!) conversations at an intermediate level.

Easy, fast, fun and effective – We will guarantee your satisfaction and a measurable level of "spoken proficiency" or your money back (rules and regulations apply, seehttp://www.pimsleur.com/Proficiency-Guarantee for more details).

Learn anytime, anywhere. No computer necessary!

The first ten Units of Pimsleur's 30-Unit Indonesian Comprehensive Program, replaces the Compact Indonesian. Indonesian Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken languagepractice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking/giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking/giving directions, and more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.

In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items.

In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 11 and provide you with an introduction to reading Indonesian. These lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation andaccent. In addition, combined Reading Lessons from all the units are included at the end.

A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.
