This volume contains ten invited papers to the special session on "Operator Theory and Functional Analysis" of the 1978 Summer Meeting of the American Mathematical Society held in Providence, Rhode Island. The papers are devoted to some active basic areas of contemporary Analysis with contributions to the Invariant Subspace Problem, Spectral Theory у Wold Decompositionss Generalized Calkin Algebras^ Peak Functions and Applications of Functional Analysis to Topological Measure Theory. It is hoped that every mathematical analyst will find in these works something to enjoy and they will serve to orient an interested fraction of researchers to pursue and develop some of the herein laid ideas. The wonderful, cooperation of Pitman's Publishing Ltd. Editorial Board in the persons of Professor Alan Jeffrey, Miss Biga Weghofer and Mrs. Veronica Baxter, as well as the neat typing and infinite patience of Ms. Gerry Sizemore-Ballard are deeply appreciated.
