During the last decade there has appeared a large number of textbooks on programming, programming languages and programming techniques. The vast majority of these books have a few programs to illustrate specific points and a few problems as exercise for the reader.
We believe that programming cannot be learned from simply reading a description of how it should be done, but rather is learned by doing. We have searched in vain for a supplementary text with a comprehensive collection of programming problems our students could attempt to solve. Having found none we have prepared a wide variety of problems ourselves and have included a brief description of the major methods required to solve them. We have collected these efforts in the form of this book in the sure knowledge that others will have experienced the same frustration in being unable to find a supplementary text of this type, and in the hope that the wide range of problems will both provide ample material for exercises and will stimulate an interest in the emerging discipline of Computing Science.
