Two 70s instrumental classics from Cecil Holmes – back to back on a single CD! First up is The Black Motion Picture Experience – an album that tries to do a heck of a lot in such a short space – and turns out to be even better than you might guess! Few folks would try to take on the entire black motion picture experience of the 70s with a single record – but funky arranger Cecil Holmes does just that, and turns out this beautiful blend of the best cuts from famous soundtracks – all remade by his ensemble in a soaring melange of strings and soul! There's plenty of funky currents here – thanks to sharp arrangements from Tony Camillo, and a killer group that also includes the mighty Pat Rebillot on keyboards – plus plenty of wah wah guitar, and enough strings to make the album rank up there with the soundtrack feel of the day. Titles include versions of "Superfly", "Slaughter", "Freddie's Dead", "Across 110th Street", "2001", "Ben", and "Trouble Man". Music For Soulful Lovers is an excellent record of smooth soulful instrumental grooves – done by Cecil Holmes with a bit of vocalizing, and a deep subdued funk sound that's a bit like Barry White – but a fair bit funkier! Cecil could be a hokier arranger on other albums – but for this record, he's really on the money, coming up with complicated soul grooves that rank with some of the best 70s soundtrack or Love Unlimited grooves of the time! Of course, part of this is thanks to some strong writing, arrangements and production by Tony Camillo, who also conducted the group. (Hey, waitaminute! What did Cecil do on the record?) The set's got some nice original material like "Stay With Me", "Loving You Hurts So Bad", and "Soulful Love" – plus some great covers, like "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby" and "Pillow Talk".
