"And again a new piano album" says Martin Tingvall's website. The Swedish jazz pianist and songwriter will present his fourth album on his own in 2021: "When Light Returns". The last album "The Rocket" was released in 2019, which landed at number one on the German jazz charts, and in 2020 the long player "Dance" was released together with his trio.

In 2021 Tingvall will be back on a solo path. Like many of his colleagues, he composed his new record during the Covid-19 pandemic. It goes without saying that this experience had an impact on his songwriting.

He explains the process of creation: “A year ago, the world suddenly seemed to stand still. As if humanity were holding their breath at the first shock of the pandemic. At the same time, this spring in Northern Europe was unusually beautiful. The sun shone from the sky for weeks, the buds of the plants and the insects came earlier than usual after the long Scandinavian winter. "

He got this impression when he returned to his house in southern Sweden after a trip to America: “During this time I was outdoors a lot in nature. During this human standstill, the power of nature seemed all the stronger to me - like a sign that wanted to show us humans that we shouldn't give up «, says Tingvall.

The 47-year-old then began composing, working with great concentration and focus on the album. The 13 new pieces were created in March 2020 within a few days and were recorded a little later.

Once again they show his broad musical spectrum, which has always moved far beyond the boundaries of jazz, be it in the direction of classical, pop or film music. And so on “When Light Returns” he plays seemingly simple-sounding, hauntingly beautiful melodies that sometimes conjure up associations of classical music, sometimes reflect his origins in Scandinavian folk music and in the next moment are close to the freedom of improvisation in jazz. Martin Tingvall has long since created his own world of sound from different sources of inspiration.

Martin Tingvall first revealed what his new album sounds like in May 2021 with the title track. The second single, "Country Road," was released in June. Both announce a wonderful, positive and optimistic piano album, just like the musician himself: »For me this album is a symbol of hope. Even if it seems that it will not go on, even after the darkest winter, the light returns in spring.
