Lawrence English yields a 20’ field recording for the ace Superpang series, capturing the ambiance of Shark Bay, Western Australia circa his modern classic ‘The Wilderness of Mirrors’.

Like his music, English operates at liminal extremes, here rendering sounds from the westernmost point of the Australian continent during the same year in which he would perform in the middle of the Atlantic ocean at Madeiradig. One ocean to another, this piece feels typically stranded and largely devoid of human or even animal presence (we were hoping for sharks, whatever sound they make), leaving the listener to question where they are, even what they are, as what appears to be waves or wind batter a tinfoil roof and shaky walls for the duration.

To be fair we could be in a Scottish bothy or by the shores of Peru and wouldn’t know the difference, but the feeling of isolation and ponderous loneliness is palpable either way in this stunning recording.
