Michael Schenker's status as heavy rock's most exciting guitarist is confirmed, the band is rejuvenated by personnel changes: Paul Raymond replaced Danny Peyronel and Leo Lyons, who had produced the band's last three albums, was replaced by Ron Nevison, whose work with Led Zeppelin had impressed and was the prelude to a series of outstanding collaborations.

The title track 'Lights Out' is an album full of quality, offering a haunting depiction of a dystopian London dripping with "batons and the smell of anarchy". The song was inspired by the same event that prompted Joe Strummer to write 'White Riot' for The Clash - the Notting Hill Riots of August 1976. Closing the record is 'Love to Love', described by Steve Harris as his favorite song of all time, arguably the album's crowning achievement. Remastered from the original tapes by legendary sound engineer Andy Pearce, the album is more sonically gripping than ever before. The set includes three bonus tracks and a bonus CD of the first show of the Lights Out Tour, performed at the Roundhouse, London, on April 2, 1977, remixed by Richard Whittaker.
