Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) war einer der wichtigsten und angesehensten englischen Musiker seiner Zeit, sowohl als Virtuose auf den Tasteninstrumenten, mehr noch als Komponist. Vor allem seine mehrstimmigen Vokalmusik-Werke erreichten früh große Berühmtheit. Im Vergleich zu seinen geistlichen Kompositionen ist der Anteil an weltlicher Vokalmusik eher gering. Sein einziges Madrigalbuch wurde 1612 veröffentlicht. Gibbons’ Madrigale kennzeichnet der Gebrauch von polyphonem Kompositions-Stil und einige der Kompositionen in „Madrigals und Mottets“ kann man begründet als Solo-Gesang mit Gambenbegleitung auffassen. Zu diesen "Songs" gehört das bekannte Stück "The silver swan".
