Mirentxu, the first stage work by Jesús Guridi, premiered on May 31, 1910 at the Campos Elíseos Theater in Bilbao with the composer himself leading the orchestra and the Bilbao Choral Society, curator of the commission. The opera is contextualized in a Bilbao in full industrial, naval and financial boom of the early twentieth century and although it is apparently simple, it addressed complex issues by taking up an idealized vision of rural Basque society and its connection with nature. This work incorporated elements such as endogenous love, redemptive Christianity and the purity of feelings, all framed in Basque, specifically in a register of rural speech. Over the course of 37 years, Guridi revised and refined Mirentxu, adapting it to his evolution as a composer and the changes in his personal life. His musical training in Paris and the influence of José María Usandizaga were fundamental in his development. After the civil War, Guridi settled in Madrid, where he gained recognition as a composer and conductor, contributing to Spanish music with notable works such as Amaya or El Caserío that constitute a legacy in Spanish classical music.
