    Sahan Arzruni was born on June 8, 1943 in Istanbul, Turkey, as the son of Stepan Jirayr Arzruni and Maryam Kalpak. The surname Arzruni comes from the ancient Artsruni dynasty, which belonged to the ancient Armenian nobility and lived around Lake Van. Her aunt, composer Sirvart Kalpakyan Karamanuk, encouraged Arzruni to play the piano at the age of four and she started playing in public at the age of five. He completed his primary and secondary education at the Esayan Armenian School and high school at the Getronagan Armenian High School in 1961. He graduated from Istanbul Municipal Conservatory, now Istanbul University State Conservatory, where he studied piano with Ferdi Shtatzer and harmony with Raşit Abed.
