This month the first recording work of the Navarro-Aragonese soprano Sabina Puértolas will be presented, The Swans in the Palace, a debut in which a parallel is raised between Emilio Arrieta (1821-1894), fundamental Spanish composer author of operas such as Ildegonda, Marina, or The Conquest of Granata and zarzuelas such as The Blue Domino, and contemporary creation with a work by Alberto García Demestres. To do this, and in a hand-in-hand with the pianist Rubén Fernández Aguirre, Puértolas has brought to the studio a collection of six Italian and six Spanish songs by Arrieta and the 20-minute lyrical scene that gives the CD its name and that both performers have commissioned from the Catalan composer (it could even be offered staged) by a single character, Isabel II de Borbón, of whom the Navarrese composer was a lover. Using poems by Antonio Carvajal, the piece is structured in seven moments that require the singer to have absolute technical and expressive mastery. Dark, serious, but also bright, Demestres' spectacular proposal - exciting for its beauty and theatrical pulse - swings between Verdian bel canto and verismo, in a language of great difficulty, with somersaults, scales and all kinds of filigrees. At the end, when Isabel laments the musician's betrayal (“Down with the Bourbons I hear you screaming, / I, who was the Bourbon of your loves”) the National Anthem of 1868 is quoted, with music by the Navarrese composer, creating an electrifying effect.
