Friday, January 28 at 20.30 (turn A) the curtain rises on the Opera and ballet Season 2022 of the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari. After the inaugurations dedicated to the music of the Italian twentieth century (La campana sommersa in 2016 and La bella dormente in 2017, both by Respighi, Turandot by Busoni in 2018, Palla de’ Mozzi by Marinuzzi in 2020), the 2022 Season sees another precious musical rarity this time by Licinio Refice (Patrica, 1883 – Rio de Moderna, 1954) which is performed for the first time in Italy in modern times: Cecilia, sacred action in three episodes and four paintings, libretto by Emidio Mucci.

The opera that was performed for the first time on February 15, 1934 at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome and that counted, in the role of the protagonist, the interpretation of the most famous soprano of the moment, Claudia Muzio, is to be considered an authentic masterpiece, both for the orchestral writing, both for the beautiful and strong plot. Among the few known performances are: in 1935 (with the direction of Refice himself) and then in 1949-1950 always at the Opera in Rome, in 1953 at the San Carlo in Naples (with Renata Tebaldi protagonist), in 1954 in Rio de T Monte-Carlo (recorded on CD with Denia Mazzola Gavazzeni protagonist).

Cecilia is represented in a new setting of the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari signed for the direction by Leo Muscato (Martina Franca, 1973), recent winner of the “Franco Abbiati” Award and who has already worked for the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari on the occasion of Verdi's highly appreciated Nabucco (2012-2015 Opera Seasons) and the Bella dormente nel bosco di Respighi (2017 Opera Season), for the scenes by Andrea Belli, for the costumes by Margherita Baldoni, for the lights by Alessandro Verazzi and for the videos by Luca Attilii.
