With the first release of “You've Got To Learn”, the celebrations for Nina Simone's 90th birthday will continue on July 21st. The never-before-released live recordings were made at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1966.

Nowhere has Nina Simone felt more comfortable than on stage in front of an audience. And it hardly mattered to her whether this stage was small or big or was under the open sky. She had started her first career steps in 1954 in a place called Midtown Bar & Grill on Pacific Avenue in Atlantic City. There she also took her stage name Nina Simone and after a short time began to sing besides playing the piano. Soon she was working her way up through jazz clubs such as the Village Gate to the noble New York temples of culture such as the Town Hall and Carnegie Hall. But Nina Simone always had a very special preference for performing at festivals, where she could mingle with fellow musicians and fans during breaks. It was there that she usually ran up to absolute top form.

Just like on July 2, 1966 at the Newport Jazz Festival. Fortunately, the approximately 30-minute concert she gave there with her well-rehearsed accompanists Rudy Stevenson (guitar), Lisle Atkinson (bass) and Bobby Hamilton (drums) was recorded at that time. Only there had never been a release of these recordings. That is changing now. Because on the occasion of the year-round celebrations for Nina's 90th birthday, they will finally be released on CD, vinyl and digital for the first time on July 21 under the title “You've Got To Learn”. To get in the mood for the album, which can be pre-ordered now, a rousing version of her self-written classic “Mississippi Godddam” is now being released as a digital single.
