    Le duo de guitaristes de pub les Tricard Twins (Tristan Nihouarn et Cédric Floc'h) devient Matmatah lorsqu'il rencontre le bassiste Eri Digaire et le batteur Jean-François Paillard et se rebaptise d'après la ville tunisienne de Matmata où Nihouarn a passé une partie de sa jeunesse. Leur premier album, La Ouaceh, s'écoule à près de 300 000 exemplaires, et le groupe passe les deux années consécutives en tournée. Le groupe est médiatisé à l'occasion d'une affaire de narcotiques, mais cette publicité ne joue pas en faveur de son second album, dont les ventes restent modestes. Matmatah passe la plus grande partie de 2004 en Asie où ils font une tournée, avant de revenir en 2007 avec l'album La Cerise.
