If the French repertoire for wind instruments of the twentieth century is also flourishing, it is partly thanks to the works commissioned by the Paris Conservatory from composers of the time. Indeed, the most prominent composers used to write genre pieces, virtuoso and modern, on the occasion of the Conservatory competition. This annual event rewarding students leaving the institution with a prize allowed young instrumentalists to prove themselves on a new repertoire.

Some of these pieces written for the bassoon have since acquired their letters of nobility and have become essential in the repertoire, such as Marcel Bitsch's Concertino or Alain Bernaud's Hallucinations. However, it is not an exaggeration to say that most of these compositions have sunk into oblivion. Victims of their number or their difficulty of execution, few of them have survived the time. We have therefore chosen to pay tribute to the rare jewels that are Fagottino by René Duclos or Portuguesa by Henri Büsser. All the more so since all these works, far beyond their compositional circumstances and their competitive aspect, abound in particularities giving them an inestimable musical interest.

To complete this program, we could not help but take advantage of the transcription of the famous and very beautiful Sicilian by Gabriel Fauré, composed before these competition pieces, and which has certainly been a source of inspiration for many of the compositions performed here.
