On this CD, Viola da Gamba (Ensemble Art d'Echo under the direction of Juliane Laake) and Bandoneon (Lothar Hensel) meet: the 17th and 20th centuries tell alternately and in each case in their very own language and form, finally in the tonal language of the 21st century to connect directly with each other and to open up new dimensions in a contemporary composition. In the center are the LACHRIMAE by John Dowland, published in London in 1604 and undisputed crown of all creations for the viol consort. In seven pavans, passion in all its facets is explored here through intense harmonic structure and perfect contrapuntal art in the musical language of the Renaissance.

The music of the bandoneon, inextricably linked with the tango music of the early 20th century, also tells of passion. Even the form, the proud dance, is a similar one. Just like his flexible but always intimate and vocal sound reminiscent of the viols. Especially for this project, the Berlin-based and New York-based composer Reiko Füting composed a contemporary piece for viol consort and bandoneon, which reflects the LACHRIMAE of John Dowland in Füting's musical language

Full of colour and diversity, openness and diversity, Age of Passion shows in a beguilingly sensual way how conclusively the different musical languages intertwine despite all their diversity when it comes to the age-old human theme: passion.
