    It is enriching to have both early music and contemporary works on your lectern. By imagining that early music is new, we free ourselves from traditions and discover current ideas and renewed meaning. Assuming that the new music is old, a certain reverence sets in as well as a trust in the composer and a feeling of devotion to him.

    But how to express in a single album his roots in classical music, his love of Bach and his enthusiasm for contemporary music? I remembered a concert given at Juilliard by Bonnie Hampton: she played the six Bach preludes interspersed with a contemporary work for solo cello. I was inspired by her and, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, I asked six Canadian composers to write cello pieces in response to Bach's preludes.
