In 2023, I'm guessing at the age of 75, ageless icon Iggy Pop blazed across the Montreux Jazz Festival stage. And sure, if you're expecting him to deliver an intimate, jazzy set heavy on his more eclectic albums (Apres, Preliminaires, Avenue B), you're gonna leave with a headache and perhaps some bruises if you were close to the stage. This blistering set pulls from his recent album, Every Loser, plenty of hits across his 50+ year solo career, and even some Stooges fare. It's almost been a decade since Iggy's last live CD/Home Video combo: Post Pop Depression: Live at the Royal Albert Hall. And while the latter featured an A-list of alt rock darlings (pulling from Queens of the Stone Age and Arctic Monkeys), this new band features a horn section and the enchanting Sarah Lipstate on guitar and, well whatever it is when you take a violin bow to an electric guitar. The horn section adds a whole new element to the songs, in many ways reminding me of unforgettable MU330 ska/punk gigs from my youth. Iggy is truly savoring the moment and the adoration of his fans. His vocals and stage theatrics remain at a fever pitch. The Blu-Ray features pristine sound and visuals. When I first saw Iggy on the Avenue B tour, watching a then 50 year old propel himself over my head into the audience, I figured, how much longer can he keep this up? 25 years later, that question remains to be answered and I couldn't be happier.
