A customary way for women to make their presence felt in rock music, to adapt the title of Haim’s album Women in Music Pt III, has been to make as loud a racket as possible. Blaring guitars, shouted vocals, walloped drums: stand up as “queens of noise”, as all-woman hard-rockers The Runaways put it in a 1977 song. Drown out the misogynists.

Like The Runaways, Haim are from California. The three sisters who comprise the band — lead vocalist and guitarist Danielle Haim, guitarist and keyboardist Alana Haim, bassist Este Haim — aren’t averse to rocking out on stage. But it would be a stretch to describe them as queens of noise. Rather than Runaways-style attitude and riffola, their first two albums, 2013’s Days Are Gone and 2017’s Something to Tell You, followed a more sophisticated variety of 1970s West Coast rock: namely, the precisely ticking drums and rippling guitars of Fleetwood Mac.

Their polished, well-constructed music has won them acclaim and popularity. But it has also generated a subcurrent of grumbling from old-school indie music types, often men of a certain age, who are suspicious of Haim’s smooth, non-confrontational nature. The sisters didn’t help their cause in this respect when they palled up to David Cameron during a joint appearance with the then UK prime minister on BBC television in 2013, a decision for which they were labelled “idiots” by The Smiths’ former guitarist Johnny Marr. Haim were judged to be on the wrong side of the barricades.
