G. LOVE & SPECIAL SAUCE, funny name, come from Philadelphia. With singer G. LOVE aka Garrett Dutton, Jeffrey Clemens on drums and Jim Prescott, the bassist, it's all about Philadelphia (or in the nickname Philly), the title of the album, the record company. This is evidence of local patriotism. Since 1992, the three musicians have been active in a constant line-up with interruptions, mixing blues, country and rap and actually quite a lot of other styles. Is that possible? Yes, definitely. Sounds a bit strange at the beginning (well, not just at the beginning), but it makes sense somehow. But, be warned, it is also quite exhausting, because G. LOVE indicates this time to make the song structures more open. That's right, a little trip on spotify (yes I take my task seriously) and I can testify to that. "Open" is definitely appropriate. "We'd have no idea, what was going to happen, before we started playing, but by the end, we'd have a song.”
All sorts of guests from both worlds have been invited to the implementation: blues icon Alvin Youngblood Hart or rappers such as Schooly D and Speech from ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and many others, at least one guest appears on almost every song.
Love From Philly (feat. Schoolly D & Chuck Treece) starts more in the rap area. The song shows jam character again and again and is definitely pretty cool. "Philly" is and will always be the star. The cartoon monkeys in the video are relaxed.
(feat. Alvin Youngblood Hart, R.L. Boyce & Speech) afterwards, thanks to the guests, he focuses more on blues, topped by rap. I really like the song. Also the jam part that quotes Hendrix. That also fits in any case. My Ball (feat. Freddie Foxxx & Jontavious Willis) is then more in the free area, with powerful hip hop, soul and gospel elements. Somehow the wild mixture reminds me a little of Master Zappa, but that certainly has to do with my age. There was no rap at Zappa either. But somehow old Frank would have made a good rapper.
