Elinor Frey, Rosa Barocca & Claude Lapalme - Early Italian Cello Concertos (2022) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

This project relates to a new album, “Early Italian Cello Concertos” to be released on April 1, 2022 on the Analekta label, a collaboration between cellist Elinor Frey and Rosa Barocca, conducted by Claude Lapalme. We recorded the album last September in Calgary, Alberta.

We have slowly come to understand that the “cello” is actually a family of instruments without one standard tuning or playing style. By bringing four Italian cello concertos together – by Vivaldi, Leo, Sammartini, and Tartini – we explore the unique and captivating sound world of the violoncello family in a period when composers were writing “galant” melodies, and we enjoy the rich harmonies and expressive counterpoint associated with Baroque music. This recording contributes to current research on the Baroque cello by performers and musicologists and is dedicated to concertos that have sparked an interest in the smaller violoncello of the late Baroque era.
