Pianist Elena Bashkirova has recorded music by Antonín Dvořák. In our programme, The Pianist answers important questions – Why is Dvořák's greatest cycle for Piano solo not part of the normal literature for the Instrument? Is it worth listening to all thirteen pieces of the cycle in a row?

The composer himself wrote of his Poetic mood pictures, op. 85. He could not have imagined that now Elena Bashkirova would prescribe the complete cycle. Dvořák has added the individual titles of the movements afterwards. They sound truly poetic and quite romantic: nocturnal walk and dalliance, chat, peasant Balade, lamenting remembrance, at the old castle, bacchanal, Goblin dance or at the Holy Mountain.

100% original Dvořák: "each piece will have a title and should express something, so to speak program music, but in the sense of Schumann, and I must immediately notice that they do not sound schumannian."The Czech master composer also wrote this to his publisher Simrock in Berlin, who was to publish the poetic mood pictures op. 85.
