Diyang Mei - Viola à l’école de Paris (2022) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

As a result of the First World War and the October Revolution, countless artists from Eastern Europe came to Paris, among them especially many Eastern Europeans who could build on an interested public and in some cases already well-established contacts. This was the case with Alexander Cherepnin, whose father had already celebrated success as a composer and conductor in the first season of the legendary Ballets Russes in 1909. Cherepnin quickly sought and found connections with groups of artists such as the later so-called École de Paris, in which emigrants from various countries had loosely come together, among them Bohuslav Martinů and Marcel Mihalovici. Cherepnin's Romance of 1922 and the Elegy written seven years later show only a small section of his truly cosmopolitan œuvre, which shifts virtuously between genres, always daring to do something new and even integrating Far Eastern influences. While the first of the two pieces is still completely under the spell of late Romanticism, the second is almost modernistic and proves to be an extremely sonorous work, not only because of its iridescent harmonics. About the same age and, like Cherepnin, also successful as a pianist, Tibor Harsányi came to Paris via the Netherlands in 1923….. (excerpt from the booklet text by Johannes Jansen).
