With this demanding program, Daniil Trifonov invites you to an exciting foray through concerts and solo works for piano. The now mature artist intends to show the modernity of Russian composers from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. This epoch is called the "Silver Age" in Russia and corresponds to the modernity of the European "Fin de siècle". In addition to the visual arts, the term also includes haute couture, design, music and ballet.

However, the vast majority of the rich programme is dedicated to the works of two composers whose modernity has developed outside Russia. Stravinsky, who had long been regarded as a dissident, is now taken by storm by Russian interpreters, but none of his works (with the exception of those from his early youth) were written or performed in his native country at the time. Having lost the score of his second piano concerto in the turmoil of the revolution of 1917, Prokofiev later wrote it again in Paris in a completely innovative style.

Scriabin's mysticism, which Daniil Trifonov mentions on the cover, is not yet present at the time of the creation of his piano concerto. It is a romantic, still quite academic early work, under the influence of Chopin, admired by the young Scriabin.

This historically very interesting program lives above all through Trifonov's extremely expressive playing both in the solo pieces recorded at Princeton University in New Jersey and in the two piano concertos conducted by the spirited Valery Gergiev at the head of his St. Petersburg Mariinsky Orchestra.
