The rich variety of colors and rhythms in South American culture and music is a key feature of this program, which focuses primarily on music by composers from the Ecuadorian Andes. The program begins with Duran's popular and crowd-pleasing Leyenda incásica and continues the theme of Ecuadorian dances in Jacinto Freire's suite, which also celebrates the flight of the condor. Virtuosity, landscape evocations and expressive traditional songs are all here. The finale is the internationally acclaimed Flute Sonata No. 1 by Mexican composer Samuel Zyman, which ranges from lyrical introspection to intense contrapuntal dialogue.
