"When you're young, when you look at Everest, … you think that one day you're going to climb it; you have to prepare, but above all, one day, you have to go … Everest is Bach's whole work; the Goldberg Variations are no exception to the rule but comparing them to other integrals (the Partitas or even The Well-tempered Clavier), the Godlbergs are not necessarily more difficult to approach. The image of Everest for me is the fact of approaching an atypical work, more than an hour long, without a break and above all, and this is not the least thing, the fact of knowing many other performers who have climbed it before me. So the references are numerous and therefore the question really arises, why approach the Goldbergs today as part of a recording? This is where the real question lies.

Before recording the collection, I worked a lot on the sequences and the relationship of the pieces to each other. I wanted to take the time to think about how to unite certain pieces by a similar character, not only by the tempi but also by the harpsichord registration, as we could consider a group of Scarlatti sonatas, for example. This work was long and pushed me to a different interpretation than the one originally conceived. To keep the consistency of the blocks, I decided to play some pieces faster (tempo equivalence), with Full-stop registers (4 feet), which are rarely heard in some variations. The "high points” at the end of the pieces are not systematic; it helped me a lot to make up these blocks of pieces. Such a vision brings another breath to the work but above all, thanks to the choice of tempi, it gives a new look to certain pieces."
