    The Berliner Philharmoniker pay tribute to the Russian jubilee: Rachmaninoff 150 Juxtaposes an outstanding performance of the famous Second Piano Concerto with Kirill Gerstein and Kirill Petrenko with a selection of solo works for piano.

    Already during the rehearsals with Kirill Petrenko and the Berliner Philharmoniker, Gerstein reports, a deep shared love for Rachmaninoff's music was noticeable – a love that was then overwhelmingly echoed at the performance in June 2022 at the Berlin Waldbühne. This fulfilling collaboration gave rise to the desire to realize a joint Rachmaninoff project and to supplement the recording from the Waldbühne with solo works. Gerstein's selection concisely traces the composer's stylistic development: based on the romantic radiance of the Second Piano Concerto, the pieces look back on Rachmaninoff's Art Nouveau style as well as the reduced sonority of the Corelli variations. At the same time, Rachmaninoff 150 focuses on the composer's connection with the Berliner Philharmoniker – a tradition that dates back to 1903. At that time it was precisely this Second Piano Concerto that was performed by the orchestra as the first work by Rachmaninoff. In 1908, the composer himself chose it for his philharmonic debut, and Kirill Gerstein also presented this piece with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2016. In addition to the recordings on SACD/CD in stereo and surround sound, the edition offers a 76-page booklet with atmospheric works of art by Thomas Struth as well as extensive accompanying texts.
