Anna Netrebko succeeds on her new album a verismo that does without verisms. Their truth lies in music, in singing, in sound. Rarely do you hear the show-stoppers of the repertoire gathered on the CD so musically thought out, so beautifully sung and at the same time highly exciting. "La mamma morta", introduced with chamber music subtlety by Antonio Pappano and the Roman orchestra, remains artistic singing even in the exhausted. The portamenti of the Butterfly aria ("Un bel dì") seem absolutely conclusive, the restlessness of waiting increases to the last and still in the last tone; also La Wally's pain is felt without emphasis. The aria from "I Pagliacci" succeeds quite wonderfully, without hustle and bustle, but with great longing. And here again, a phenomenal performance by the orchestra, which celebrates the instrumental hint of the birds with unprecedented precision and sophistication.
Anna Netrebko has preserved her lyrical sound core, even in a horrendously heavy piece like the Gioconda aria, the voice never loses its balance, it retains its round, soft, full, sensual, radiant and at the same time sensitive nature. One is surprised how simple many things on this recording sound, how natural – how true. The big outbursts are emotional, but never fall out of the musical line. Even the "Tutto è finito" at the end of the mighty Manon-Lescaut aria is sung out. Anna Netrebko perfectly resists any temptation to want to set color accents outside her frame. The voice always vibrates freely, and the soul vibrates with it - without the singer having to consume herself. After all, Verismo is not naturalism or even vocal method acting – but the highest desire.
