The recently Grammy Award-winning British label SIGNUM CLASSICS is proud to present its next discographic coup: the first album by Romanian-born star soprano Angela Gheorghiu. Described as "the world's most glamorous and gifted opera star" (New York Sun), her magnificent voice and dazzling stage presence have made her a unique international opera superstar.

The new album, released to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of the famous Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini, contains a collection of well-known arias and songs covering many years of his career, including little-known early works. His great predecessors such as Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi also wrote songs with piano accompaniment, but Puccini's songs are very different in style and feeling: even the earliest ones reveal the originality and individuality of his musical and vocal character. From the very beginning, the melodic line shows the characteristic feature of spontaneous changes of form and expression, which gives the performance a freedom that is clearly different from the way in which the songs of his great predecessors were performed.

The album contains the world premiere recording of the recently rediscovered aria Melanconia, which was probably composed in 1883. Other notable works on the recording include the Salve Regina from Le villi, Storiella d'amore and the title piece A te, which Puccini composed when he was only 16 years old.
