The first, obvious reason is that we’ve been performing these two works for a long time, with the greatest imaginable pleasure. They challenge us as musicians. In Berg’s case the challenge takes us to the farthest frontiers, and in Mendelssohn it is just as formidable. That would be the outer motive.

On this latest album from the Ébène Quartet, it's Brazil as you've never heard it before. Following their acclaimed Jazz/rock/pop fusion album Fiction (one of NPR's Top Albums, all genres 2011), the Ébène Quartet have made a mixture of bossa nova and samba, shaken up into an intoxicating cocktail of rhythms and melodies from a diverse range of cultures, countries, and musical traditions. Music includes the score from Terry Gilliam's 1985 film Brazil, Argentinian tango, and numbers by a variety of song writers such as Stevie Wonder, Sting, and Charlie Chaplin.

The Italian fifteenth century Laude still remain to this day a little-known and mysterious musical treasure. 2013 will mark the 600th anniversary of the birth of Saint Catherine of Bologna (1413), a woman of both deep theological insight and extraordinary, artistic talent, who founded and guided the first monastery of the Clarisse in Bologna in 1456. La Reverdie have discovered the repertory of laude sung by the Saint and her sisters, and have placed it in its original context: the expression of a mystic devotional practice which the saint herself vividly describes in her own devotional treatise «the Twelve Gardens».

The members of Les Vents Français, which has been described as "the wind-quintet equivalent of a supergroup" join the Munich Chamber Orchestra and conductor Daniel Giglberger in five examples of the sinfonia concertante. The form flourished in the decades around 1800, particularly in Paris and Mannheim, and the works here are by Parisian luminaries Pleyel and Devienne, Mannheim resident Danzi, and a genius who visited Paris and took inspiration from the music of Mannheim: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
