For a long time Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello worked as Kepellmeister at the Wurttemberg court in Stuttgart. His concerti a tre are actually triosonates for two violins and basso continuo. In these charming chamber music works Brescianello finds his own style, which is characterized by sonorous slow phrases and joy in virtuosity.

“As I was asked by the St George Strings to lead a project from my instrument, I immediately thought about a Joseph Haydn project – his two famous cello concertos, and «The Seven Last Words of Christ». Among other things, it was inspiring and motivating for me to nd a special way of playing in the strings, so that the colour of the winds from the original version of the two cello concertos would not be missed.

The bulk of La mer was composed during a visit to Burgundy – a long way from the nearest sea – although the work was completed in the English seaside town of Eastbourne. The composer himself argued that his inspiration was drawn from a range of ocean view paintings and from literature in which the sea played a major part.

In later life, Mendelssohn always opposed the use of the terms ‘Scottish’ and ‘Italian’ for his symphonies in A minor and A major respectively, as if to emphasise their qualities as ‘pure’ music. Yet they were directly inspired by his European Grand Tour of 1829-32: from the gloomy ruins of Holyrood Abbey to the sun-drenched landscapes of Rome and Naples, his imagination fashioned masterpieces that have seldom been surpassed for their sense of orchestral colour, vividly brought out here by the period instruments of the Freiburger Barockorchester.

Featuring two versions of the vibrant and gutsy Violin Rhapsody No. 1, the majority of the album is dedicated to orchestral works, namely the Dance Suite and the famous Concerto for Orchestra, making for a lively and engaging release performed by world-class musicians.
