Giya Kancheli is not a member of any compositional "school", but in its profoundly simple means of expression and its mystical preoccupation with time, space, and motion, his music shares similarities with several other 20th-century Eastern European composers. The fact that a pianist with such classical training as Jean-Bernard Pommier could react with so much pleasure, animation and intelligence in the execution of this sonata, proves that the jazz is not anymore a reserved district, a ghetto of the musical world. It also proves the big competence of Claude Bolling to shape a thought and an inspiration modernism of which can be assimilated by all and the marvellous aptitude of Jean-Bernard Pommier today which succeeds not only in illustrating the text brilliantly but that, by interventions where his personality is never stifled by the writing, brings new colouring and unique sensitivity.

On their second album, Harmonium had expanded from a trio to a five-piece as they were joined by keyboardist Serge Locat and Pierre Daigneault who handled various wind instruments, including flute, clarinet and saxophone. This time there were actually no drums around at all, but you won't probably give it a thought at all when you're listening to the rich and progressive sound of "Si On Avait Besoin d'une Cinquième Saison" that had a concept based around the different seasons of the year. And before anyone start arguing that an old Italian used the same concept exactly 250 years earlier: Harmonium added their own twist by including a mysterious fifth season. This imaginary season was represented by the fantastic 17-minute "Histories Sans Paroles".

This is a Masterpiece Live album! It is among my all-time favorite live albums. Harmonium with modern & vintage keyboards is a perfect combination. Fiori's eccentric lead vocals are amazingly fluid. The ecstatic compositions parts have outstanding follow through, because the complex music is VERY changing here and significantly varies in intensity…
