The Allman Brothers Band debut album, like the following three records made by the original Allman Brothers lineup (which included the late Duane Allman and Berry Oakley), is pretty essential stuff. Included here are all of the elements that would make Live At The Fillmore East one of the greatest live records ever: Duane's searing guitar playing, Gregg's hoarse, soulful vocals and poetic blues songwriting (both "Dreams" and "Whipping Post," two of his best, are here), and the near-telepathic interplay among all six members of the band.

With this album, Capitol Records began the inevitable process of repackaging the music of The Band, which the company would do at increasing length without solving the fundamental problem that The Band, despite the quality of their individual songs, was not a singles act and was hard to summarize in a compilation. That said, for the real neophyte, this single-disc, 11-song album may be as good as anything. It contains The Band's two most famous songs, "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," as well as the group's only Top 30 hit, "Up On Cripple Creek," and such songs as "Tears Of Rage" and "Stage Fright" that they probably played at nearly every show they performed. It's true that if you really want to understand The Band, you have to hear all of "Music From Big Pink" and "The Band."

    Respects to the original uploader.

Private Audition is a concept album whose cuts represent various performers singing their stuff for a decidedly phlegmatic casting director. But the concept is essentially a conceit whereby vocalist Ann Wilson can shuck the Robert Plant-sounda-like tag that's dogged her since Dreamboat Annie. This foray into uncharted musical waters by Ann and the band yields its share of mistakes. On the whole, though, the successes outweigh the embarrassments, making Private Audition Heart's bravest LP to date.
