The first instalment of Vladimir Jurowski’s Tchaikovsky cycle – the Manfred Symphony – was recorded live in December 2004, one of the early releases on the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s own label. With all the classic symphonic, melodic, and ballet elements of a Tchaikovsky composition, this Manfred is haunting, brilliant and seamless, as good a Tchaikovsky symphonic performance as you could want, and the most enjoyable.

Vladimir Jurowski will become the LPO's principal conductor in September 2007, and the rapport he has already established with the orchestra is obvious from this exceptional account of Tchaikovsky's symphonic portrait of Byron's tragic hero, recorded at London's Royal Festival Hall in December 2004. Not that any allowances need be made for the fact that it is a live event - the occasional cough and the final applause aside, it is a wonderfully vivid recording of an exceptionally vibrant, immaculately played performance. Jurowski perfectly characterises each movement. There's an implacable fierceness about the first movement that contrasts with the Mendelssohnian lightness of the scherzo. If he fractionally overdoes the rubato in the main theme of the slow movement it hardly matters, for the woodwind playing is exquisite, while the finale is launched with fearsome weight of tone and energy that is sustained right up to the entry of the organ in the coda, which becomes a real coup de théâtre. A superb disc.
