Virpi Räisänen, one of the most sought after Finnish female singing talents at the moment, has garnered an impressive list of honours and achievements both as a mezzo soprano and earlier as a concert violinist. Next to her successful violin career singing was always her other passion, earning her singing diploma with the highest distinction. Her warm mezzo voice and her strong musicality is leading her from one success to another. "The Legacy of Mahler" is a collection of late Romanticism Lieder by Mahler as well as Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, Dmitri Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten, who were all strongly inspired by Mahler. Räisänen's duo partner at the piano is the highly-acclaimed Marita Viitasalo.

Much is made of Virpi Räisänen’s dual career path. Though an accomplished violinist, she is now making her name as a mezzo-soprano – not unprecedented but indeed rare, and with obviously positive artistic side effects. With a Nordic timbre suggesting a genetic kinship with Karita Mattila, Räisänen’s instrument is clear, clean and beautifully produced from a technical standpoint, with an extra something that’s initially hard to put your finger on. Then, as the recital goes on, you realise a violinist’s sensibility is at work and, with it, a lack of what many of her vocal counterparts seem to consider inevitable, such as pitch-obscuring vibrato at high volumes and a lack of fine details in any given vocal line. As much as her sound recalls Mattila, her vocal line is like Felicity Lott’s.

The programme’s theme, ‘The Legacy of Mahler’, is not pursued strictly. The Mahler selections are early works that other composers aren’t likely to have known but were basic to Mahler’s aesthetic and were refracted through works that have reached a bigger public. Early works by other major composers such as Schoenberg, Berg, Britten and Shostakovich also chart the early evolution of great artistic personalities.

This album was mastered using our 2xHD proprietary system. In order to achieve the most accurate reproduction of the original recording we tailor our process specifically for each project, using a selection from our pool of state-of-the-art audiophile components and connectors. The process begins with a transfer to analog from the original 24bits/96kHz resolution master, using cutting edge D/A converters. The analog signal is then sent through a hi-end tube pre-amplifier before being recorded directly in DSD 5.6mHz using the Merging Horus/Hapi In and the dCS Vivaldi Clock. All connections used in the process are made of OCC silver cable.

DSD5.6mHz was created using Merging Horus/Hapi A/D converter, calibrated to the required format, and a dCS Vivaldi clock.

2xHD was created by producer/studio owner André Perry and audiophile sound engineer René Laflamme.
