“She shared the brotherhood of talent with her famous sibling”, wrote the poet and music journalist Ludwig Rellstab at the death of Fanny Hensel née Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the wife of the Prussian court painter Wilhelm Hensel. It was a fitting epitaph for an extraordinary woman who had died after suffering a stroke on 14 May 1847 at the age of 41.

The entire portent of Rellstab’s claim has fully come to light only in recent times. Fanny, the eldest sister of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, granddaughter of the philosopher and friend of Lessing, Moses Mendelssohn, and niece to the notorious Dorothea Schlegel, was not only a musical prodigy, an outstanding pianist and conductor, and the closest confidante and adviser of her brother, as well as a sparkling letter-writer; she was also “the most significant woman composer of the 19th century” (Franz Krautwurst in Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, Supplement, article “Fanny Hensel”, 1979).

This album presents chiefly first recordings of her piano works, above all works that were published by the composer herself, which help us gain a differentiated look at the creative resources of this exceptional woman.
