Maestro Sergiu Celibidache was one of the most uncompromising figures in the music world, demanding three times as much rehearsal time as other conductors and with an ardent dislike of making recordings because he feared they misrepresented his musical intentions. This recording of Anton Bruckner's fifth symphony was made in October 1986 in Japanese Suntory Hall.

A valuable record of a concert held as part of the Suntory Hall opening celebrations in October, 1986. In the opening series that was held until March 1987, there were concerts by Seiji Ozawa (substituting for Karajan) & Berlin Philharmonic, Mariss Jansons (substituting for Mravinsky) & Leningrad Philharmonic, Abbado & Vienna Philharmonic, Sinopoli & Philharmonia Orchestra, Slatkin & St. Louis & others which attracted a lot of attention. In 1986, there were many other performances, including Jochum & Concertgebouw Orchestra, Carlos Kleiber & Bavarian National Orchestra, Solti & Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Mazere & Vienna Philharmonic, Seiji Ozawa & Boston Symphony Orchestra, Fedoseyev & Moscow Broadcasting, Rozhestvensky & Soviet Union Ministry of Culture, Stein & Bamberg, Mariner & Stuttgart Broadcasting, Koshler & Slovakia Philharmonic, etc. Within the context of all these other concerts Bruckner’s No. 5 performance, conducted by Sergiu Celibidache, attracted a great deal of attention from enthusiastic music fans due to its magnificent scale, delicate expression, & incredibly finely controlled orchestral sound. Music critic Minoru Okamoto said, “I have a frank impression that there are few recordings of Celibidache with such high reproducibility. Here is a record of the sound that deserves to be called the true art of Celibidache. When I actually listened to it, I was impressed by the long, dense & beautiful sound of the orchestra. The Munich Philharmonic conducted by Sergiu Celibidache was also known for having a larger organization than usual, but the sound quality is superb, reminiscent of its overwhelming sense of scale. Celibidache, who was then still standing & conducting, was in excellent physical condition, & I am truly amazed by the perfect orchestra control”.
