Ondekoza (鬼太鼓座) ("demon drum group"), sometimes referred to as "Za Ondekoza", is a Japanese troupe specializing in taiko drumming. Founded in 1969 by Den Tagayasu, in Sado Island, Japan. Ondekoza was influential in the rise of the kumi-daiko (group taiko) style of taiko. Not a taiko player himself, Tagayasu helped transform taiko from a festival-based music form to a virtuosic performance art performed on stage. Ondekoza's performances in North America in 1975 was the first exposure for many and helped spread interest in taiko through North America. The now widely recognized style of wearing only a 'shimekomi' ('fundoshi loincloth) was originally started by Ondekoza when Pierre Cardin suggested that the physique of the drummer be exposed. The traditional Japanese drummers do not play only in underwear. One of the keys to the group's success was the arrangement of traditional melodies and styles into stylized, artistic musical pieces. This Box Set have been released in Japan by Audio Meister as # SACG-3005~10.
Kagura (music offered to the gods) is a form of traditional performing art using giant drums, performed at festivals at temples and shrines. Ondekoza is a troupe of percussionists utilizing this and other folk arts through taiko (drum) music. Formed on Sado Island in 1969, they have pursued a rigorous and severe training and disciplined lifestyle that eventually led to some members splintering off to form the group Kodo. Ondekoza continue, however, creating lengthy and dramatic drum and percussion pieces, augmented by shakuhachi flute and koto, that build from a whisper to a scream. There is a great deal of theater to their performances, with loin-clothed drummers in highly stylized and ritualistic presentations, so any CD only conveys half the experience. However, the music itself is intense and full of drama, with the thunder of the taiko drums a formidable calling card, even for the gods.
