This isn't Nick's best, but at the time we were all waiting for "Labour Of Lust II". That record never showed up, this one did.
The review below is a bit harsh. No, this isn't Nick's best, but at the time we were all waiting for "Labour Of Lust II". That record never showed up, this one did. Then others. Were we all a bit disappointed. Give it a fresh try. Nick tries on different feels and moods and genres. Listening again, with the knowledge of where he was eventually heading, it ain't bad. Yes, there are some clinkers, but even those are in good fun.
With his "Cowboy Oufit" band or was it "Noise To Go"? In any case, Paul Carrack is on backing vocals.
From allmusic:
Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
"Caught between the desire for another big pop hit and his burgeoning re-interest in country music, Nick Lowe made the most confused album in his career with The Abominable Showman. Although Lowe's craftsmanship hasn't abandoned him, he isn't particularly inspired on Abominable Showman. Furthermore, much of the album is hampered by stiff, dated new wave production, which makes amiable throwaways like "Saint Beneath the Paint" irritating. Still, Lowe manages to break through the tedium with charming, clever pop-rockers like "We Want Action," "Time Wounds All Heels," "(For Every Woman Who Ever Made a Fool of a Man There's a Woman Who Made A) Man of the Fool," and the silly doo wop of "Tanque-Rae." But a song as sharp as "Ragin' Eyes," with its wryly observed lyrics and infectious melody, make it clear that the rest of the album is lacking."
Christgau is on the mark:
"Pretends he only goes for bad puns, yet he trails "Time Wounds All Heels" with "(For Every Woman Who Ever Made a Fool of a Man There's a Woman Who Made a) Man of a Fool." No tour de force, just unlabored love songs, and my best to the Lowe-Carters. B+"

No music was harmed in the making of this vinyl rip.
This is what I do in general. Not every step is done for all rips:
LP > Rega P1 with Ortofon Super 30 > TC-750LC > E-Mu 0202 > Adobe Audition 3 (AA) @ 96kHz 32bit float > Manual click removal in AA > Click Repair set @ 20 > AA used to balance L/R > (for MONO: Equalizer (from the ClickRepair guy) used to combine L+R >) AA to split tracks, fade in/out, and for manual click removal >
for 24bit: use AA to truncate the 32bit file >
for 16bit: Izoptope RX Advanced to resample the 32bit file to 44.1kHz > and then to dither to`16bit using MBIT+ >
All > Trader's Little Helper to FLAC and (for 16bit: sector align if necessary, pad) > MP3 Tagger to edit tags.
"16bit" = 16bit at 44.1kHz
"24bit" = 24bit at 96kHz
