Over the past few years, Jan Willem de Vriend and The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra have made recordings of all the symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven. This box contains them all. Important classical magazines like Gramophone are enthusiastic about the series: "These are strong, thrustful performances which make sense in terms of the music in hand and the orchestra's own character and competence".

There are certain works in the classical canon that are so frequently performed that they are almost clichés. So when yet another recording of Beethoven's First and Fifth symphonies is issued, the question arises: what distinguishes this album from the others? In the case of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, the answer is a youthful, brisk energy that pervades both symphonies and attentive phrasing that ensures each instrument is heard. Under the baton of Jan Willem de Vriend, the NSO begins the First Symphony elegantly, and then gives way to the Allegro with rapid, clean strings, powerful percussion, and lower voices that are well balanced and distinct. It is the punchy percussion that distinguishes this recording from others, as it is often aggressive (such as in the Menuetto), but not unmusically so.

Hearing Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies played in period style is a common occurrence nowadays, because the movement for historically informed performances has profoundly influenced most classical musicians since the 1980s. Even a thoroughly modern symphony orchestra can adapt to the best scholarship and known practices, as Jan Willem de Vriend and the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra demonstrate in their performances of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in D major and the Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, "Eroica," on Challenge Classics. With the exception of 18th and 19th century brass instruments, the orchestra uses modern strings and woodwinds, so period style and techniques are more apparent in the execution than in the peculiarities of instrumentation. Crisp articulation, sharp attacks, alert rhythms, and propulsive tempos create the impression that this might be a period ensemble, and the robust accents and polished sonorities complete the authentic effect. De Vriend, who also conducts the early music ensemble Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, shows genuine feeling for the Classical period in his shaping of phrases, balancing of sections, and overall interpretation of the score, and he draws out distinctive sounds and expresssions that can be compared to the efforts of Nikolaus Harnoncourt and John Eliot Gardiner.

Because the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra is a modern orchestra that on first sight wouldn't be mistaken for a period ensemble, it might come as a surprise that its recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies with conductor Jan Willem de Vriend sound quite a bit like fully fledged period performances. To the extent this group produces Classical sonorities, albeit on modern instruments (except in the case of the original 18th and 19th century brass they use), and borrows authentic practices from historical scholarship, a random excerpt test could fool any expert. This isn't to say that the tempos are necessarily faster than they are traditionally played in the Symphony No. 9 in D minor, "Choral," or that the approach to Beethoven's music has become fussy or rarefied in their hands. But de Vriend, a musicologist who also leads the early music ensemble Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, gives this work robust energy, sharp attacks, crisp rhythms, and some tone colors that are simply remarkable. The horns have a marvelous brusqueness, the timpani are startling with the hard mallets, and the strings frequently shine with the silvery tone that comes from playing senza vibrato. The singing of Schiller's German text in the finale, "An die Freude," is shaded with Dutch pronunciation, though in other regards it is conventional and offers no period surprises. These world-class performances were brilliantly recorded in the DSD format, so the music is captured in its wide dynamic range and spacious acoustics.
