Italian pianist Massimo Farao's popularity in Japan and elsewhere has been elevated since he started recording for the independent label Venus Records. Following his successful trio album Luiza comes an interesting piano-bass duo album with his musical partner, Aldo Zunino who has performed and recorded with Andrea Pozza, Francesco Cafiso, Tony Scott and Joey DeFrancesco.
The entire album is designed as a tribute to legendary bass players, with the duo performing mostly well-known compositions by Oscar Pettiford, Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Sam Jones, Ron Carter, Buster Williams and Walter Booker.
With the fat and gutsy sound typical of Venus Records, these are powerful, propulsive and swinging duo performances. It is refreshing to revisit all these great compositions by jazz bassists. This album helps us renew our appreciation of their compositional talents as well as the artistry of Farao and Zunino themselves.
