Tosca was the role in which – in 1965, the year this recording was made – Callas gave her last complete performances at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera and the Paris Opéra. This was her final complete recording of an opera, and, 12 years after her first version of Tosca, it reunited her with the Scarpia of Tito Gobbi. They were joined by Carlo Bergonzi as Cavaradossi. Gramophone praised ‘a thrilling and very complete interpretation, with scene after scene, bar after bar, brought to life by sheer intelligence and dramatic insight’.
Tosca played a crucial part in Callas's career. It was her first major success in Greece in 1942, and the final opera in which she appeared, in London in 1965. She sang the title role 51 times - her most performed part after Norma and Violetta - and made two studio recordings of the opera. In addition, the diva's only role preserved in staged performance on videotape was Tosca -Act II, opposite Tito Gobbi, filmed in 1958 (Paris) and 1964 (London), plus an abridged version for American television in 1956, with George London.
This recording, which followed the historic 1964 Zeffirelli production at Covent Garden, is indispensible. Although the 1953 Callas Tosco under De Sabata is widely considered a definitive reading of the opera, this version offers added depth of characterisation, and countless details. All the iconic Tosca 'moments7 are addressed in a manner so indelible, so right, as to seem inevitable. And although the ensuing decade had reduced Callas's vocal opulence and steadiness on top, the singing per se is gorgeous.
As was the case in the theatre at the time, Callas's lyricism in the Act I love duet is astonishingly beautiful. The duet which follows, opposite Gobbi's legendary Scarpia, lays the groundwork for the Act II confrontation and murder, the most thrilling on recordings. In the one moment of repose in that act, Callas creates a mini-masterpiece with 'Vissi d'arte' - intimate, personal and vocally impeccable. Her Act III monologue describing the murder of Scarpia is riveting, the climactic phrase soaring to high С and plunging down two octaves into chest voice on one breath. Callas follows this with phrases sung meltingly to her Cavaradossi (the vocally elegant Carlo Bergonzi).
Seeing Callas and Gobbi in Tosco in the opera house, one had the sensation of peeking through a keyhole at the actual events upon which an opera was later based, so vivid was their collaboration. One of the many miracles of this recording is the way in which it captures that dynamic - the diva's final complete opera on disc, a souvenir of greatness.
