A famous backstage photo was taken in Chicago after one of just three performances that Callas gave of Madama Butterfly; it shows the soprano in her Japanese costume, snarling furiously at a bailiff who had served a writ on her - the very image of the tempestuous diva. By contrast, in her recording of the role, 'it is, miraculously,' as the critic John Osborne observed, 'the 15-year old girl and not the great Callas who stands before us.' Her genius for vocal characterization finds an apt complement in Herbert von Karajan's conducting: 'a wholly sympathetic rendering [that]brings out more of the detail of the score than I have ever heard before', wrote Gramophone.

On 7 April 1935 a girl calling herself Nina Foresti appeared on New York radio within ‘Major Bowes Amateur Hour’, and sang ‘Un bel dì vedremo’ from Madama Butterfly. As Callas was said to have appeared on this programme, John Ardoin, after extensive listening, reported that Foresti’s speaking (but not singing) voice bore ‘an astonishing resemblance’ to Callas’s. Nicholas Petsális-Diomídis, historian of Callas’s young Greek years, is totally unconvinced. Either way Callas’s involvement with the role of Cio-Cio-San continued at sporadic intervals with a duet when a student, a recording of the two main arias in 1954, this taping of the whole opera under Karajan in Milan in June 1955, three stage performances in Chicago in November 1955, a clutch of concerts including ‘Tu? tu? piccolo iddio!’ in the summer of 1963 and work on several scenes (including Pinkerton’s aria) in masterclasses in 1972–3.

The work (and interest) for Callas in this role was clearly to defy age (and culture) and to present the Japanese child bride for real. She achieved this (in the complete recording) so completely that first critics were worried by or even hostile at the sheerly different sound Callas produced throughout Act I – risking a child’s lighter timbre even on full-out fortissimo phrases – and at carefully selected parts of the remainder of the opera. Was this vocal acting or a theatre of the voice carried too far? As John Steane wrote, ‘it is, miraculously, the 15-year-old girl and not the great Callas who stands before us’.

These ‘selected parts’ include a careful study of ‘Un bel dì’ in which passages are the progressively disillusioned, frightened adult, and others are the still hopeful child, and a similar varying of tone in Butterfly’s attempts to cheer up herself and Suzuki later in Act II. Walter Legge was able to second these intentions from his prima donna with Karajan’s meticulously drilled and intentionally restrained conducting and Nicolai Gedda’s suave, ambivalent (and rather non-Italianate) Pinkerton.
