At various times during Pour in the Sky, Liquid Jesus tries nearly everything: punk, country, blues, soul, Zeppelin-esque hard rock, psychedelia, and grinding funk. On the best tracks, they blended several styles at the same time, creating an unpredictable but fascinating fusion of ideas. Few other alternative bands could imagine the idea of a jazzy torch song turning into a heavy metal romp, but Liquid Jesus could not only imagine it, they pulled it off on "Feelings Flower." download this +1 as mp3 samples The fact that they could mine all these styles without losing their identity as a grungy alternative band was either their strength or their weakness, strength because the resulting album holds up very well as a core of good songs surrounded by a musical history lesson. The members of Liquid Jesus borrowed ideas from other bands and genres with gleeful abandon, and the colorful mix of ideas was far more interesting than almost anything their contemporaries were doing. This strategy was nevertheless a weakness because the radio programmers had no idea what to do with such a sprawlingly diverse album. Rolling Stone gave the album a very good review, as did several other influential journals, but the Pour in the Sky never got the attention it deserved. 4,5/5 - AMG Album Pick allmusicguide
