Unlike many of his contemporaries, Georg Philipp Telemann was not born into a musical family. His parents, descendants of a line of Lutheran pastors, wanted him to pursue a brilliant academic career, and Telemann taught himself to play various instruments such as the violin, flute, zither, and harpsichord. He quickly demonstrated great musical talent and began composing his first pieces at the age of ten, often in secret and on borrowed instruments. At twelve, he composed his first opera, Sigismundus. To discourage him from pursuing a musical career, his mother confiscated all his instruments and sent him to boarding school. She probably didn't know that the superintendent was passionate about music and that he would suggest that Telemann compose motets for the church choir every week, as well as occasional arias…

And so it was, Telemann was launched on his path, and he would ultimately emerge as one of the most prolific composers of all time: nearly 6,000 works, of which approximately 3,700 have survived—twelve sets of cantatas, around 100 oratorios, 44 passions, more than 600 French overtures, 40 operas, and numerous concertos, orchestral suites, quartets, and sonatas.
This program is intended as a modest tribute to his immense body of chamber music.

The focus is primarily on the Six Trios of 1718—Telemann's first printed compositions—which are the most technically demanding of his chamber music cycle of 1715-1718.

Unlike Johann Sebastian Bach and his great solo works (the harpsichord partitas), Telemann's chamber music is convivial, beautifully adapted to the language of each instrument used. The numerous reprints of the Trios confirm that this approach met a need among musicians of the time.

Given their instrumental variety, this type of opus was perfectly suited to musical circles, even though Telemann probably intended these Trios primarily for musicians of a court chapel: he dedicated these works to Duke Frederick II of Saxony, who had offered him the position of master of the court chapel in Gotha (which Telemann declined, but which he skillfully used to obtain a significant salary increase of 100 florins per year from the Council of Frankfurt!).

This new project with Les Timbres and Telemann will be a long-term one: first, this instrumental program will do justice to this brilliant composer—underestimated today—with the recording of the six Trios from 1718 by Les Timbres and Harmonia Lenis (a partner ensemble in Japan).
