Music from "The Elder" is the ninth studio album released by KISS. It was an attempt on the part of the group to establish KISS as credible artists, and also to reverse the trend of declining album sales and commercial popularity that had begun in 1979. Instead, the album further served to alienate the group's fan base and represents the lowest point commercially for the group. Album sales were so poor that Kiss did not embark on a supporting tour for the first time in its eight-year history, opting instead to make a handful of promotional appearances. Music from "The Elder" was the last KISS album on which Ace Frehley appeared until the 1996 Reunion Tour. Frehley, disgruntled with the band's creative direction as well as with the production of Bob Ezrin, stopped actively participating in the KISS operation by early 1982, and officially quit the group by November that same year. This was also the first time PolyGram Records was mentioned on any KISS album. This was the beginning of PolyGram taking over Casablanca Records. While "A World Without Heroes" was later performed on the band's 1995 MTV Unplugged appearance, the entire album has been largely ignored in live performances. During a 2004 Australia show, the band attempted to perform "I", but Gene Simmons had long forgotten the lyrics. OK folks, There have been many debates about the different versions of this album. I'm going to try to clarify all of it for you if I can. There are essentially three notable versions to speak of: 1. The early first US pressing came with the song titles listed in the correct US running order on the back cover. This version also came with an inner paper sleeve that had the lyrics printed on it in black & yellow ink. The running order for the songs match on both the vinyl & cover. This is the rarest of the pressings. 2. The later US pressing came with the song titles listed in the incorrect running order on the back cover & is missing the song "Escape From The Island". This version also came with a clear inner poly/plastic sleeve that had the credits printed on it in black & yellow ink and a white paper insert with the lyrics printed on it in black ink. The track listing on the cover does not match the actual vinyl. The track listing on the cover is actually the Japanese running order without the song "Escape From the Island". The vinyl in both US pressings are identical to each other. The only difference is the covers and inserts. 3. The Japanese pressing came with the song titles listed in the correct Japanese running order on the cover. This pressing does not have the song "Escape From the Island" on the album. This was the band's intended running order for the album. I have included complete scans from both US pressings so you can see the differences.
