KISS is the debut album by American band KISS. When it was released on February 18, 1974, KISS had been a band for a little over a year. Much of the material on the album was written by Gene Simmons and/or Paul Stanley, as members of their pre-KISS band, Wicked Lester. Simmons estimated that the entire process of recording and mixing took three weeks, while co-producer Richie Wise has stated it took just thirteen days. The album was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City, which was owned by the company that owned Buddah Records. Neil Bogart, founder of Casablanca Records, was an executive at Buddah prior to forming Casablanca. There are a number of different pressings of the album. The first being a white label, promotional copy (NB-9001)without the song "Kissin' Time" (the band had not yet recorded the song at the time of the album's release). This promo was never sold to the public. It was only sent to radio stations for airplay. Next was the commercial release of NB-9001 with a blue "Bogart" label. This was exactly like the promo with the exception of the label change. Two months later Neil Bogart heard about a kissing contest being promoted by a local radio station in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. KISS was booked to play there so Neil (looking to cash in on the publicity) hastily sent the band back into the studio to record "Kissin' Time" to release as a single. The song was then added to the track listing for the album giving us yet a third version. NB-9001 began to be pressed with "Kissin' Time" as track one on side two of the album. The cover however, was not changed. The only mention of the song on the new cover was in the form of a sticker placed in the upper font left corner of the cover. The fourth & most common version of this album was NBLP-7001. After Warner Bros. broke their contract with Casablanca for distributing their records, Casablanca Records became completely independent. They now manufactured & distributed their own records. This is why the catalog number changed. The tracks include "Kissin' Time" & for the first time, the song was printed in the track listing on the back cover. I have included scans for all four pressings. The version heard here is from the NB-9001 with "Kissin' Time".
