Gene Simmons is a 1978 solo album from the bassist and vocalist of KISS. It was one of four solo albums released by the members of Kiss on September 18, 1978. The album was possibly the most lambasted of the four by critics who couldn’t begin to grasp the autobiographical nature of the album. Without a doubt it was a strange album that moves through all sorts of different genres, moods, and influences. More interesting, Gene’s was the only solo album where a member of KISS did not play his own associated instrument, in this case bass, on their own album. Gene reverted back to his original instrument of guitar while utilizing session players for the bass. Additionally, the album was the most egotistical in terms of the number of guests and the incredible in-depth thanks list that named just about everyone ever associated with KISS and then some. Background vocalists on the album included: Gordon Gordy, who would later work on albums by Yoko Ono, Cyndi Lauper, and David Bowie; Diva Gray, a regular backing vocalist for Chic who would work on Sean Delaney’s “Highway” album; Kate Segal, who in the 1980’s would become better known as Peg Bundy on the “Married With Children” TV series, as well as providing backing vocals on Molly Hatchet and Bette Midler albums. As far as the special guests go, while Gene was unable to get Paul McCartney and Lassie to appear on his album, he did manage to get a plethora of other stars: Bob Seger, who had been a regular opening act with his Silver Bullet Band for KISS, guests on “Radioactive” and “Living In Sin”. Joe Perry, of Aerosmith, who made a guest appearance on “Radioactive” also did some guitar work for “Tunnel Of Love,” Inserts for "Gene Simmons" included: A merchandise order form & a fold out poster that was cut in a puzzle piece to fit together with the other "Solo" album posters. I've included scans for everything that came in the first pressing.
